How To Prevent Delamination While Drilling Carbon Fiber and Other Composite Materials

The Deschner Dual Speed Mini-K Kinechek

 During the drilling of an in-line hole, a negative deformation plane forms as chip formation stops and the tool approaches the end of the cut.  The shearing of the negative deformation plane contributes to burr formation and breakout as cracks spread along the plane causing destruction of the desired finished exit hole.  When drilling carbon fiber and other composite materials, this breakout occurs as "delamination" and can be a costly problem.

The Dual Speed Mini-K Kinechek Speed Regulator is specially designed for the drilling of carbon fiber and other composite materials, especially in hand-operated drill applications.  The "Dual Speed" function increases production efficiency and reduces worker fatigue, while eliminating delamination and breakout.  The first part of the stroke is the "Fast Feed" (F.F.) feature, which is freely managed by the worker (SPEED 1)* to drill as quickly as possible through the workpiece.  The final 1/4 inch of the stroke is the "Control Feed" (C.F.).  As the drill nears the exit hole, the C.F. engages and slows down the forward motion (SPEED 2)** to minimize delamination and breakout, hence the name “Dual Speed”.   Although our standard C.F. is fixed at 1/4 inch, this distance can be customized to your particular application.  

*    The F.F. (SPEED 1) is not affected by the unit’s adjustment knob.   It is governed by the viscosity of the internal fluid.  For instance, the F.F. of a "Standard Speed" Dual Speed Mini-K unit will have more more resistance (move slower) than a "Fast Speed" Dual Speed Mini-K unit.  In hand-held applications, this translates to the worker having total control of the speed.  The length of the F.F. can be customized to a particular custom application but, once established, it cannot be altered.

**  The C.F. (SPEED 2) is regulated by the adjustment knob just like a regular Mini-K Kinechek.  The overall range of speeds attained by the unit's adjustment knob is also subject to the viscosity of the internal fluid, as defined by it's model number.

Using the Kinecheck PeckChek for Deep Hole Drilling (Peck Drilling)

Drilling to a depth of more than three times (3X) the drill diameter often requires peck drilling where the drill is repeatedly withdrawn to remove waste cuttings while being advanced in steps deeper and deeper during each feed movement.  Deschner PeckCheks were designed specifically for use in these deep hole drilling applications. 

The plunger rod on a standard Kinechek speed regulator is designed to automatically extend with every stroke.  But for efficient peck drilling, the Kinechek speed control function must be restricted to occur only when the drill is cutting.  Therefore, the plunger rod remains in position while the drill retracts to clear the chips away.  By design, there is a slight extension of the rod (approx. .005 inches) to prevent the drill bit from impacting the work piece.  This is an especially important feature when using smaller drilling tools.  This tiny gap allows for the speed control function to engage before the bit re-enters the hole, preventing bit breakage.    The PeckChek Control in conjunction with a special Kinechek is designed to operate in this manner.

The PeckChek Control is a one-way ball clutch that prevents the automatic extension of the plunger rod. It fits over the plunger rod and attaches to the body. However, PeckChek Controls must be used only with special Kinecheks that use plunger rods that are hardened full length, to withstand the brinelling action of the ball clutch, and are approx ½” longer in length to accommodate the PeckChek Control without loss of controlled stroke. Although the PeckChek Control when mounted on the special Kinechek forms a single unit, the PeckChek Control is sold separately from the Kinechek.  This is because the same PeckChek Control can be used on Kinechek models numbers having different stroke lengths.  PeckChek Controls are available for use with Slimline, Super K and Mini K Kinechek Models.

One of the key features of both the Deschner Slimline Kinechek Industrial Hydraulic Speed Regulator and the Cushioneer Shock Absorber is the ability to adjust the speed setting to suit your needs.  And once the ideal setting for your application has been set, you may not want anyone, including the machine operator, to alter it.  If this is the case, you will want the following accessory.











The Deschner Tamper-Proofing Kit can be installed onto the adjustment knob of any Slimline model Kinechek or Cushioneer to prevent unauthorized changes to the stroke speed.  It is a plastic cap that covers the adjustment knob, preventing access.

How to secure the adjustment knob on a Slimline Kinechek Hydraulic Speed Regulator, using the the Deschner Tamper-Proofing Kit.

NOTE!
IT IS IMPORTANT TO WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN WORKING WITH ANY MACHINE TOOLS!

PART 1
Installing the Tamper-Proof Cap

STEP A
Set the speed by rotating the knob using the groove as the indicator.

STEP B  
Insert the plunger spring through the hole in the adjustment knob.

STEP C
Compress the spring within the hole and hold with your fingers.

STEP D  
While holding the spring together, slip the tamper-proof cap over the end of the plug.
When the cap is half way over the spring and secured, remove you fingers from the spring.
Then simply continue to press the cap until it snaps onto the plug end.

STEP E  
Rotate the cap to ensure it moves freely without changing the adjustment setting.

PART 2
HOW TO REMOVE THE TAMPER-PROOF CAP

Locate the cap removal tool.

Rotate the cap until you can see the white plastic spring assy through the 2 small holes.

Securing the cap with your fingers, insert the tool into the 2 holes and compress the spring.

SLOWLY squeeze and pull simultaneously, until  you feel the cap start to separate from the body.

The cap removal tool can then be removed, but keep the cap and body secured with your fingers.

Then SLOWLY reveal the spring plunger assy until you are able to secure it with your fingers.

WARNING!  There is a loaded spring inside and could pop out if you're not careful!!

That's it! You are now free to change the setting and then reinstall the tamper-proofing cap.

How to properly adjust the Deschner Kinechek
Industrial Hydraulic Speed Regulator / Controller

Insert a metal dowel or screwdriver
into the hole of the adjustment knob.

Align the knob to the desired scale
setting using the groove indicator.

A setting of zero is fastest.

Increasing the setting increases the resistance.

Always adjust the knob while it is at rest.
  DO NOT rotate the knob DURING a stroke.

Different Kinechek models have distinct ranges
depending on fluid viscosity and stroke length.

Stroke times may vary slightly between units of
the same model.  Adjust each unit independently.

When synchronizing multiple units, fine tune
the timing of each unit prior to operation.

30 is the highest setting and the slowest motion.

The gap between 30 and 0 is not recommended. 
It is essentially a hard stop, a fully closed unit.

What is the best industrial hydraulic feed control / speed regulator?

The short answer is the Deschner Kinechek.   But why?

The American company, Deschner Corporation, revolutionized the industry in 1960 when Mr. Richard E. Deschner invented the Kinechek hydraulic speed regulator.  The name Kinechek was derived from the word "kinetic", meaning motion or movement, and "check", meaning to slow down or stop.  Before the Kinechek, hydraulic speed regulators were bulky one-size-fits-all monstrosities that leaked and required constant refilling.  Well, Mr. Deschner changed all that.

It does not rely on sliding seals.  The Kinechek is a compact unit with a hermetically sealed environment for the fluid; so there is no leakage and no need for refilling.  It uses super-clean FDA approved silicone fluid that gets filtered on every stroke. No dirt, dust or lint can contaminate the fluid so the internal flow aperture never silts to cause variation in the plunger speed.   They are ideal to control the feed rate of pneumatic drills, lathes, mill tables, part feeders, or any equipment that requires a controlled rate of movement.  And since it is leak-proof, it is also well suited for the food industry.

The Kinechek really is a marvelous piece of engineering!  So much so that many others have been trying to copy it for 50 years.  But none have been able to duplicate the durability or performance of the Kinechek.  Comparison endurance testing shows that the Kinechek continues to work up to five times (5x) longer than any other brand on the market, including the "Hydro" speed regulator, which is just an attempted knock-off of the Kinechek by a large drill manufacturer.  These other brands might be less expensive, but they lack the smooth, durable, leak-proof performance of the Kinechek.  In fact, there are still Kinechek units being used today after decades of service.  In the long run, these other brands will end up costing more in production downtime.  The Kinechek is built to last.
